FC EXCLUSIVE PROFILE
Aaron Sims has spent 25 years building the monsters, creatures, and worlds that define modern cinema. Now he's building something for himself.
"Every creature I've ever designed started with a question: what does this thing feel? Get that right, and the audience believes everything else."
Walk into any multiplex on any given weekend and there's a reasonable chance you're looking at Aaron Sims' work. The Demogorgon from Stranger Things. The infected creatures from I Am Legend. The web-slinging suit of The Amazing Spider-Man. The alien landscapes of countless science fiction epics. For over 25 years, Aaron Sims has been the invisible hand behind some of the most iconic visual moments in modern cinema — the creature designer, the VFX artist, the filmmaker who built the impossible and made it feel inevitable.
Sims founded Aaron Sims Creative (ASC) in Los Angeles after years of working his way through the ranks of Hollywood's most demanding productions. The company became a go-to for directors who needed someone who could translate the most ambitious creative visions into practical, buildable, believable reality. His client list reads like a who's who of blockbuster cinema: Steven Spielberg, J.J. Abrams, the Duffer Brothers, Sam Raimi.
But what makes Aaron Sims genuinely remarkable isn't the credits — it's the philosophy behind them. In an industry that often treats creature design as a technical problem to be solved, Sims approaches it as a deeply emotional one. Every creature he designs has a psychology, a history, a reason for being the way it is. The Demogorgon isn't scary because it looks terrifying. It's scary because, in Aaron's hands, it feels like something that could actually exist — something that evolved, that hunts, that wants.
The Stranger Things work brought Sims to a new generation of fans, many of whom had no idea they'd been living with his creations for years. The show's creature design became one of its most discussed elements, and Aaron's work was at the center of it — a perfect synthesis of practical-era monster design sensibility and modern digital execution.
Beyond the blockbusters, Sims has spent years developing his own creative voice as a filmmaker and storyteller. His YouTube channel and online presence have built a devoted following of artists, designers, and film lovers who want to understand not just what he makes, but how and why. He teaches, he shares process, he demystifies the craft that most studios keep locked behind NDAs.
