Grand Theft Auto VI launched on May 26, 2026, for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S. It is the first mainline entry in the Grand Theft Auto series since GTA V, which was originally released in September 2013 — a 13-year gap between numbered entries. By any measure, GTA VI is the most anticipated video game ever made.

The first trailer dropped on December 5, 2023, and was viewed over 93 million times in its first 24 hours — the most-viewed video game trailer in YouTube history at the time. A second trailer followed in May 2025. The game's release date was confirmed as May 26, 2026, and pre-orders broke records across all platforms.

THE SETTING: LEONIDA AND VICE CITY

GTA VI is set in Leonida — a fictional version of the state of Florida — and centers on a Miami-inspired city called Vice City, which last appeared as a GTA setting in 2002's Grand Theft Auto: Vice City. The map is significantly larger than GTA V's Los Santos and includes the surrounding Leonida countryside, swamps, and smaller towns beyond the city limits.

LUCIA: THE FIRST FEMALE PROTAGONIST

The game introduces Lucia as the first playable female protagonist in the mainline GTA series. She is a career criminal navigating the criminal underworld of Vice City alongside her partner Jason. The dual-protagonist structure echoes GTA V's three-character system, but the dynamic between Lucia and Jason — and the story's focus on their relationship under pressure — gives GTA VI a more grounded emotional core than previous entries.

THE CULTURAL MOMENT

GTA VI's launch was a genuine cultural event. The game sold over 10 million copies in its first three days across PS5 and Xbox Series X/S, making it the fastest-selling entertainment product in history. Social media was dominated by clips, reactions, and discoveries for weeks. The game's satirical take on Florida culture, social media, influencer life, and American excess landed exactly as Rockstar intended — sharp, funny, and uncomfortably accurate.

The PC version is expected to follow in late 2026 or early 2027, consistent with Rockstar's historical pattern of releasing PC versions after the console launch.

GTA VI is not just a game. It's a mirror held up to the culture — and the culture is staring back.
